Fiji: Qiliho's acting police term up this week

1:36 pm on 8 February 2016

Fiji's acting police chief says he will happily return to the military barracks if he doesn't get the top job.

The former land force commander Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho's three month appointment is due to end this week.

He has told FBC News his term ends on Thursday.

He says it is entirely for the Constitutional Offices Commission to decide on whether he stays on with the force or whether he has to return to the military.

The Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama appointed Mr Qiliho to the acting role after the sudden departure of expatriate Ben Groenewald who left after citing interference by the military in policing matters.

FBC News reports Mr Qiliho as saying he has put in his application with all good hope.

He says if it is decided he is not fit for the job and he needs to return to the army barracks then he says he will happily return.

The Commission has declined to answer any questions from RNZ International pertaining to the recruitment process for the next police commissioner.
