Two suicides in New Caledonia jail

11:12 am on 9 February 2016

Two prisoners in New Caledonia are reported to have committed suicide in two unrelated incidents last Friday.

The news agency AFP reports the two men were 24 and 25 respectively.

It says one of them had been involved in a riot in late January, prompting tighter surveillance of the Camp-Est jail.

The prison is overcrowded and at the centre of persistent criticism for the poor state of the facilities.
