Surgery delayed due to repair work at Solomons main hospital

Surgery has been cancelled and a waiting list is growing at Solomon Islands main hospital because repair work is needed.

The Solomon Star newspaper reports two of the National Referral Hospital's three operating theatres were closed in December last year for repairs but so far work has yet to be done.

A visiting orthopaedic surgeon from Australia told the paper the two month closure means non-emergency treatment and surgeries have been delayed.

Paul Hitchin said waitlisted people are being told to be patient but he says authorities should address the issue as soon as possible to prevent unnecessary suffering.
