Saipan to have ordnance explosions on Thursday

The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas has scheduled an ordinance detonation on the Marpi airfield in Saipan for Thursday.

The Department of Public Safety warned residents that at 11am local time on Thursday, Marpi will be closed ahead of a 1pm detonation.

It's advised all residents, workers, visitors, tour companies and guides to make proper adjustments to their daily schedules.

The airfield was built by the Japanese during the Second World War, taken over by the United States in July 1944 and eventually handed back to civilian control in 1962.
