Sport: Cyclone Winston puts football grounds out of action

12:07 pm on 22 February 2016

Damage from Cyclone Winston has closed at least three major sporting grounds in Fiji and forced the cancellation of all but one national football league match.

The CEO of the Fiji Football Association, Bob Kumar, said the impact was felt at grounds in Lautoka, Nausori and particularly at Govind Park in Ba.

"The structure, the pavillions on both sides of the ground have been ripped off. The roofs have fallen off - it's lying on the main ground at the moment so definitely Govind Park is out of use now. Churchill Park in Lautoka was under construction - that is also out of use - and the Ratu Cakobau Park in Nasori has also had severe damages. The floodlights etc have come down as well so definitely these three grounds will be out of use for the next few weeks."

Bob Kumar said the status of grounds in Labasa and Nadi remains unclear but they hope to make an assessment on those later today, now that the national curfew has been lifted.

ANZ Stadium in Suva hosted a national league game on Friday night and remains safe and usable.

All other domestic matches were cancelled and it's not yet clear when the season will resume.
