The Northern Marianas is increasing alert levels to try and ensure Zika doesn't reach the territory.

Zika is already a significant health issue in American Samoa, Samoa, and Tonga.

The Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation's Chief Executive, Esther Muna, said it's possible travellers could bring the virus in.

Her agency is monitoring all services and providing the most up to date guidance to medical providers, especially in the treatment of any Zika symptoms she said.

The Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation is also advising both travellers and locals to take preventive steps to ensure they do not get bitten by mosquitoes which carry the virus.
