Agricultural exports face huge drop in Tonga

Tonga's agricultural exports volume declined sharply in December by 81.5 percent.

Radio Tonga reports the exports decreased from close to 3000 tones to only 500 tones recorded last December.

Export receipts fell by 38 percent, which stood at just over US$500,000 for December.

The Reserve Bank said the decline was due to the closing of the squash season.

Other agricultural exports also declined such as cassava, taro leaves, watermelon and breadfruit.

It is believed the dry weather conditions in the December quarter compared to the September quarter affected agricultural production.
