Guam have been beaten 1-0 by Oman in their final Football World Cup qualifying match, in front of a crowd of 8,000 fans in Muscat.

Ahmed Mubarak scored the only goal of the game for the home side eight minutes after halftime.

That means the Matao will finish fourth in Group D on seven points, behind Iran, Oman and Turkmenistan.

Head coach Gary White said despite the loss his players were brilliant, hitting the post and cross-bar but giving up a sloppy goal.

He said there was no difference between the teams despite Oman being ranked 60 places higher and felt Guam deserved a point.

The Matao won their first two qualifying matches against Turkmenistan and India but failed to score a goal in their next six matches.

Gary White expected their seven-point total would be enough to go through to the final round of Asian Cup qualifying as one of the four best fourth-placed teams, avoiding the play-off round.
