Mysterious mass fish deaths in American Samoa

7:39 pm on 8 April 2016

The Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources in American Samoa is investigating two fish kills in the villages of Amouli and Laulii

Thousands of dead baby rabbit fish have been found on the beaches and in shallow waters at the villages.

The Chief Fisheries biologist Domingo Ochavillo [Or-char-vee-lio] says they cannot ascertain the cause of the fish death and are sending samples of the dead fish off island for analysis.

An Amouli resident , who reported the fish kill in their village, says the same thing happened there in 1996.

The Department has asked residents to notify it as soon as they see large quantities of dead fish on their beaches.
