The government of Tonga says it is negotiating with Tonga Rugby Union to help it clear outstanding debts to local and overseas companies.

Radio Tonga says the prime minister, 'Akilisi Pohiva, met members of World Rugby this week, looking at addressing the union's debts which extend back to 2011..

In January, World Rugby froze funding to the Tonga union.

Both the government and World Rugby agreed to partner up and manage the Tonga union, but an agreement on this is still being drafted.
