PNG anti-fraud office reopens

Papua New Guinea's Police Commissioner has announced he will reopen the country's anti-corruption office after he controversially closed it almost three weeks ago.

Following the office's moves to arrest the Attorney General Ano Pala and a lawyer who represents the Prime Minister, the country's top policeman alleged the office had not communicated with him and followed due process.

However the National Court last week ordered Mr Baki to reopen the office, after contempt of court proceedings were brought against him.

Mr Baki's predecessor, Geoffrey Vaki, was given a three-year jail term last year for contempt of court after preventing police from executing an arrest warrant on the prime minister.

Mr Baki said the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate would reopen at 10am PNG time today, and he would meet its director, Chief Superintendent Mathew Damaru and the Deputy Director, Timothy Gitua.
