PNG cancer centre defends its credentials

Following calls for more cancer drugs by an outgoing doctor at a Papua New Guinea hospital, authorities have defended the facility's credentials.

The cancer treatment centre at Lae Angau Memorial Hospital requires specialist cancer doctors trained on modern equipment, and decided not to renew the contract of Dr John Niblett, who made the calls for more drugs last week.

But the hospital secretary said that shouldn't send the message that the hospital was not well-staffed.

Pasoce Kase said the current cancer specialist, Dr Deepak Ghimire, had been working with patients in the facility for the past couple of years and would continue to lead it.

Mr Kase said the hospital also had two new cancer specialists joining soon to expand the services currently available.
