French Polynesia's president, Edouard Fritch, has met Russia's ambassador to France after talks in Paris with French government officials.

Mr Fritch invited Alexander Orlov to Tahiti while the ambassador invited the French Polynesian leader to Moscow to explore economic and cultural co-operation.

Mr Fritch met top French officials and advisors to discuss matters raised during the visit to Papeete of the French president, Francois Hollande, including changes to the law providing compensation for victims of France's nuclear weapons tests.

The French president indicated in February that Paris would disburse more than $US 6 million to set up an oncology center at Tahiti's hospital but details remained unclear.

Reports say the cost of radiation-related cancer treatment amounts to about $US 75 million a year.
