Rarotonga and Aitutaki are expected to receive visits from 26 cruise ships this year and it's hoped more will be able to disembark than last year.

The Cook Islands Ports Authority harbour master Saungaki Rasmussen says a relatively large number of cruise liners couldn't let passengers onshore last year because of bad weather.

He's told the Cook islands News the visits are important for the islands because the passengers spend on everything from taxis to eating out..

The P&O luxury liner Pacific Pearl stopped at Rarotonga earlier this month and the next cruise ship is expected to visit the island in August.
