American Samoa upgrading driver licensing

7:31 pm on 17 June 2016

The American Samoa Department of Public Safety is working to upgrade driver licensing system in an effort to comply with the US federal government requirements.

Police commissioner Save Liuato Tuitele says the upgrade will make the American Samoa licences more compatible for people when travelling off-island, and bring the system closer to compliance with US federal requirements.

The upgrade is being welcomed by many lawmakers because drivers' licences are being used as ID to board flights within the United States as well as to enter federal and military facilities.

Failure to comply with the federal requirement means American Samoa residents are required to produce another form of government issued picture ID , such as a US passport.
