PNG and China trade links set to grow

5:32 pm on 7 July 2016

The Papua New Guinea Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, is seeking greater access for PNG agricultural products into China.

The government says the request was made as part of a broader discussion during bilateral meetings in Beijing this week.

Mr O'Neill says both governments have signed a Strategic Partnership of Mutual Cooperation and Development.

He says this will lead to more trade and greater opportunities for the export of Papua New Guinea products.

The prime minister says China is a prime market for PNG agricultural products and the deal will be a large boost for PNG farmers.

He says PNG has also asked China to increase its importation of LNG once the Papua LNG project is complete.

Mr O'Neill said PNG will also carefully consider China's proposal for a free trade agreement.
