Nauru government claims abuse reports fabricated

6:15 pm on 16 August 2016

The Nauru government has dismissed the latest revelations of abuse and cruelty at the asylum seeker camps on the island as fabrications.

Last week, the Guardian published more than 2000 leaked incident reports filed by staff at the camps detailing the assaults, sexual abuse, self-harm attempts, child abuse and living conditions endured by the inmates in the camps.

Human rights groups say the camps must close immediately, and there is pressure now for a senate inquiry in the Australian federal parliament.

Buts in a tweet, the Nauru government claimed the latest reports were further examples of what it called the Australian leftwing media, Greens MPs and advocates using refugees as pawns for their political agenda.
