With the launch of a new ferry, the northern islands of Tonga now have a sea connection to the capital Nuku'alofa after a month without services.
The MV Maggie Cat made its maiden journey to Vava'u and Ha'apai on Thursday.
It has been chartered from an Australian company.
The MV 'Otunga'ofa is under repair and has been out of operation since June and an alternative service also broke down last month.
The Friendly Islands Shipping Agency CEO Mosese Fakatou said the new ferry which can carry 260 passengers has filled a hole in the kingdom's transportation needs.
"It has come at the right time, virtually there is no passenger ferry between Nuku'alofa and the northern islands of the group and everybody is welcoming this Maggie Cat," he said.
Mosese Fakatou said the 'Otunga'ofa is due to return to service sometime in October but he expects to continue using the Maggie Cat until at least November.
