The Cook Islands Government is planning to invest heavily in roads over the next four years.

The Finance Minister Mark Brown said in the latest Budget they had allocated $US1.46 million for each of the next four years to upgrade the quality of roads on Rarotonga.

"We are hoping to push that out and roll that out as quick as possible, utilising the private sector to deliver and build the roads that we want and I am hopeful that before the end of the year those programmes will start to roll out," he said.

The Cook Islands News reported there had been significant criticism of the state of the country's roads.

Mr Brown said the work would meet New Zealand roading standards.
