Hail wrecks houses in Vanuatu

2:59 pm on 11 October 2016

A hail storm in Vanuatu's Shepherds group has destroyed seven houses.

Chief David Maripu of Tongamea village on Emae Islands said some of the destroyed thatch houses were built after last year's Cyclone Pam.

He said after the hailstorm their trees have no leaves left and villagers wonder whether their root crops were also affected by the 15-minute storm.

Chief Maripu said no one was injured during the hailstorm and that ice produced by it has been melting since this morning.

It is understood that the first hailstorm in Vanuatu was on Tanna island just before Christmas 2002.
