Papua New Guinea police are undergoing bomb detection training in preparation for next month's FIFA Under 20 World Cup, which is being held in Port Moresby.

Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi said city-wide operations will begin shortly in the lead-up to the tournament.

Mr Turi said the operation will include road blocks and an increase in patrols and searches of vehicles.

He said the security team consists of police, army and correction personnel.

The team is currently working on how to conduct bomb searches.

"With the help of our army officers and Australian and New Zealand police officers, it is an ongoing [process], for also the election next year and there are a number of activities coming up. FIFA is first for now, the elections and then the main APEC, (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation)," he said.
