Police in Papua New Guinea say they will arrest and charge whoever is responsible for spreading a rumour that a Jiwaka woman had married a snake.

The Post Courier reported the claim that the woman married a snake and was now pregnant had spread across Jiwaka province, as well as neighbouring Western Highlands and Chimbu.

A family spokesperson, John Tombil, said the young woman had not married a snake and was not pregnant, and the family was preparing legal action.

The police confirmed that a formal complaint had been laid, adding that the person who was responsible for the rumour would be arrested and charged.
