The provincial governor, Kelly Naru, said more than 20 houses on Lababia Island were washed away by two nights of heavy rain and water supplies have been contaminated.

Bridges, roads and other infrastructure have been destroyed he said.

Mr Naru, who has toured the affected area, told EMTV that repairs are likely to cost more than $US1.5 million.
