A former member of parliament in Vanuatu, David Abel, has lost his properties in the north of the capital, Port Vila, to an eviction order.

The Daily Post reports that the eviction was reportedly over unsettled debts owed to a commercial bank.

It said the eviction was conducted by a police operation, and a shop, nakamal and two shelters were torn down.

A nearby school was forced to close its doors because of fears for the safety of students.

Mr Abel is a well-known indigenous land rights advocate.
