The government's spokesman said the House of Polynesia will be in Russia's second biggest city St Petersburg.

The spokesman said this is a major step to also help boost tourism which remains the territory's main industry.

No date has been given for its opening.

According to Tahiti's public broadcaster, the initiative stems from last April's meeting between the president Edouard Fritch and the head of the St Petersburg's centre for international relations and cultural exchange.
