New Caledonia firefighter injured in gun attack

2:14 pm on 14 November 2016

New Caledonian firefighters have abandoned work on a bushfire after being shot at north of Noumea.

The public broadcaster said the incident occurred on the main road near Paita where unidentified gunmen hit a fire engine and injured a firefighter.

Police helped rescue the injured man who has been taken to hospital.

As a result, the firefighters withdrew leaving the fire unchecked.

Two weeks ago, unidentified gunmen forced the closure of the road for several hours because they fired guns at the traffic and dumped burned cars on the road.
