Asylum seekers giving up on sailing to Australia

1:27 pm on 17 November 2016

Some Pakistani asylum seekers in Indonesia say they are no longer intent on reaching Australia by boat.

The ABC spoke to a Hazara asylum seeker in the Javanese city of Bogor who said it was widely understood that the route by sea remained blocked.

He said Australia's refugee resettlement deal with the US will not encourage asylum seekers to make the ocean voyage.

Another refugee said she lost three family members in an attempt to reach Christmas island which has deterred her from trying to access Australia by boat.

The International Organisation for Migration in Indonesia said it was educating asylum seekers about how Australia detains boat people on Nauru and Papua New Guinea's Manus Island.

Australia has announced it will deploy warships to its northern waters to deter a new wave of asylum seekers.
