There has been no information for the families after the murder of Mary Dean and Roger Tauarea and the apparent suicide of the gunman, Chris Rimamotu.

Escaped prisoner Rimamotu had obtained a gun and shot his former wife and her new partner.

The families said comments by Prime Minister Henry Puna, Justice Minister Nandi Glassie and Police Commissioner Maara Tetava that the tragedy was preventable intensifies the need for an independent commission of inquiry to be held as quickly as possible.

Mr Puna and Mr Glassie have also publicly supported this.

But our correspondent reported that to date no one had been told what happened, exactly how their relatives died or whether the government will go ahead with an inquiry.
