A bidding process is now underway and the Vanuatu Daily Post reports eight companies are through to the final stages.

The $US59 million World Bank funded project is for an overhaul of the runway, lighting upgrades and terminal facilities, along with upgrade work at Pekoa airport in Luganville and Whitegrass on Tanna.

Air New Zealand stopped flying to Port Vila at the start of this year, citing safety concerns.

Four companies are vying for all the work while four are focussed on Bauerfield only.

Of the eight companies involved five are from China, two from New Zealand and one from New Caledonia.
