Fiji rent freeze extended for another year

12:39 pm on 3 January 2017

Landlords in Fiji must respect the 2007 rent freeze, which has just been extended for another year, the country's Commerce Commission says.

The Commission's chief executive Joel Abraham told FBC News there had been a significant number of complaints from tenants, who said they were being asked to pay more or were threatened with eviction.

Mr Abraham said the rent freeze first imposed in March 2007 had no exceptions.

He said a landlord could not evict a tenant, get a new tenant and raise the rent by saying it was again a first letting.

Mr Abraham said those imposing illegal increases could be fined up to $US940.

Trade Minister Faiyaz Koya said the rent freeze order had been amended to make it mandatory for the landlords to issue proper agreements and accurate receipts to tenants.
