Fiji officials investigate fish poisoning following four deaths

7:29 am on 6 January 2017

Fiji's Ministry of Health and Medical Services is investigating multiple cases of fish poisoning in the village of Somosomo on Gau Island.

This follows the death of four men this week from Somosomo village who failed to respond to treatment by medical personnel based at Qarani Health Centre.

The doctor stationed on the island had accompanied another patient to Suva for serious medical assistance.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services staff visited Somosomo village yesterday and are conducting investigations to ascertain the total number of people who have eaten the suspected fish and are experiencing symptoms of fish poisoning.

Health officials say any patients who appear to be at risk will be carefully monitored and treated as required.

The priority for the Ministry at this stage is to ensure that all those affected are treated appropriately.
