France's centre-right Republicans have put off endorsing any candidate for the two New Caledonian seats in the French National Assembly.

The party's national council met in Paris but declined to back anyone in New Caledonia where the party has split into rival factions at the time the party in France experienced rifts at the top.

Last November's presidential primary of the Republicans in New Caledonia was won by Nicolas Sarkozy who, however, France-wide came third and was therefore eliminated from the race.

This means that the winner Francois Fillon was not the New Caledonia Republicans' first choice.

Those contending to get the party's nomination include a former National Assembly member Gael Yanno.

The two seats are currently being held by Philippe Gomes and Sonia Lagarde.

He is a former president and she is the mayor of Noumea.
