A Russian diplomat says Fiji police had a Russian suspect in last year's killing of a Russian couple but no evidence to tie the individual to the crime.

Last June, the mutilated bodies of Nataliya Gerasimova and Yuri Shipulin were found a week apart on Natadola beach several days after their abandoned car was found.

The diplomat Eduard Shakirov, who recently met Fiji investigators, told the news agency TASS that at one stage their Russian business partner was a suspect but that no charges were laid and that he left Fiji when his visa expired.

TASS also quoted a police source as saying the abandoned vehicle was cleaned of any fingerprints, even of those of the killed couple.

Earlier this week, the Fiji police commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said the investigation had reached a dead end and police needed information from the public.
