French Polynesia's pro-independence Tavini Huiraatira Party has deferred its Congress until next month.

The delay is linked to plans by its leader Oscar Temaru to stand as a candidate in this year's French presidential election.

The Tavini Congress will now be held on March 25th to await an outcome of his election bid.

To be eligible to stand, a candidate must have at least 500 signatures of the potentially 47,000 parliamentarians, assembly members and mayors across France and its dependencies.

Last month, Mr Temaru had enough backers but they have to be from 30 different departments or territories and his were from just 17.

When Mr Temaru announced his candidacy, he said his aim was to win most votes in Tahiti but not in mainland France.
