A former public servant with the Papua New Guinea Department of Justice will spend 25 years in prison with hard labour for murdering his wife.

PNG Loop reports Jeffery Saa was sentenced in the Waigani National Court on Monday after he killed his wife in March 2014 at Waikele market in Port Moresby.

The woman was selling betel nut at the market when Saa attacked her with a knife.

Saa pleaded not guilty despite the incident taking place in full view of the public, but he was found guilty of wilful murder.

The court said the biggest losers in the mayhem were the couple's children.
