The Francophones have made a winning start to the Oceania Under 17 men's football championship in Tahiti.

Yann Vivi's 11th minute header was enough to give the hosts all three points in a 1-0 Group A victory over Vanuatu at Stade Mahina.

Coach Patrice Flaccadori said he couldn't ask for a better start.

"I'm very pleased because the first match of a competition is never easy," he said.

"Essentially you have to win the first match - that's what we did tonight and that's what is important."

In the earlier Group A match, Bernard Iwa converted from the penalty spot in the third minute of added time, giving New Caledonia a dramatic 3-2 victory over Papua New Guinea.

Paul Gope-Fenepej put the French territory in front after just five minutes and the midfielder doubled their advantage after the half hour mark.

A long lob from defender Kimson Kapai pegged a goal back for PNG before the halftime break and it was game-on when substitute Barthy Kerobin equalised in the 64th minute.

But, with a draw looming, New Caledonia captain Abiezer Jeno was taken down in the penalty box and Bernard Iwa stepped up to fire home from the spot and hand his side the win.

A very relived coach, Michel Clarque, was impressed with the way his side held themselves together to the three points.

"I think the team deserved the win. It was difficult for sure," he said.

"It wasn't always exactly the most beautiful football, and it was a win we had to chase maybe more with our hearts and desire."

Meanwhile Group B gets underway today with New Zealand taking on Samoa and Fiji up against Solomon Islands.
