Top mining executive resigns

The top executive of the Indonesian branch of the mining giant Freeport has resigned only three months into the job.

Instead, Chappy Hakin will move to an advisory role with the company, which operates the world's largest gold and copper mine in West Papua.

His resignation comes as the company is the midst of a protracted battle against Indonesia's new mining laws, which require miners to convert their current contracts into special mining permits.

The Jakarta Post reported that Freeport has repeatedly said it won't agree to it unless the government gives it assurance of long-term investment stability.
