The Marianas Visitors Authority said in the beginning of the year the islands welcomed 63,346 tourists - the third best January ever.

Arrivals from South Korea nearly doubled for the second month in a row, reaching more than 30,000, while tourists from China were up 23 percent to 25,000.

On the downside, visitor numbers from Japan continue to plummet, largely due to the loss of airline seat capacity for the once key CNMI market.
