Nurse concerned at what Vanuatu hospital lacks

An Australian volunteer nurse, who's been working at Lamap Hospital on Vanuatu's Malekula, says there needs to be immediate action over a lack of electricity and water there.

Helen O'Sullivan, who has now returned to Australia, said she had had to deliver babies by torch light at the hospital.

She said it also had no running water, creating a threat of infection.

Ms O'Sullivan also said there is an acute shortage of medicine and up to date medical equipment.

Lamap Hospital delivers between two and three hundred babies a year and caters for up to 200 patients a week.
