The new service is being touted as beneficial to Central and North Queensland people looking for better access to various Pacific and Asian cities.

From Moresby, travellers coming from Townsville can go on to major Asian centres such as Manila, Singapore and Hong Kong as well as Honiara, Nadi, Port Vila, Pohnpei and Chuuk in the Pacific.

PNG's prime minister Peter O'Neill is expected to travel to Townsville on Air Niugini's inaugural flight direct from Port Moresby on 31 March.
