American Samoa is struggling to attract handball players to represent the territory in the Oceania Youth Beach Championships in May.

President of the American Samoa Handball Association, Carl Floor Senior, said it was not an easy task considering handball was a new sport to Samoans and one most locals have never heard of.

He said efforts to recruit young players was also made difficult because Samoans love and prefer rugby, American football, soccer and volleyball.

The territory have been invited to compete in the first ever Oceania Youth Beach Handball Championships in the Cook Islands, for players 17 and under.

The Oceania Champs are a qualifier for the 2017 World Youth Beach Championships and the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

Eight boys and eight girls will be representing American Samoa and they have been actively recruiting players throughout the territory in an effort to be inclusive to all villages.

Carl Floor said American Samoa's team still had three remaining spots on both the girls and boys team to be filled.
