Australia's governor general, Sir Peter Cosgrove, has arrived in Papua New Guinea.

Sir Peter's arrival is part of commemorations for the 75th anniversary of the New Guinea campaign in World War II.

In 1942, Japanese forces invaded the then-Australian colony of New Guinea from the north towards the Highlands, kicking off an Australian- and US-led pushback campaign.

Over the next two days, Sir Peter will lead Anzac day services in Port Moresby, Isurava, Kokoda and Milne Bay.

He will also meet with PNG's governor general, prime minister, opposition leader, and the governors of Oro and Milne Bay provinces.
