The crew of a traditional Chamorro canoe in the Northern Marianas had to be rescued and their vessel towed back to safety after hitting high seas.

The vessel - a Chamorro Sakman - had six crew on board including a master traditional navigator Tony Piailug.

They had been returning to Guam when they encountered rogue waves between Saipan and Tinian.

The four-day trip from Guam was reported to be the first such voyage by a traditional Chamorro canoe in 200 years.

Officers from the Department of Public Safety towed the canoe back to Saipan where it stayed for a couple of days before starting out again for Guam.
