Fiji's opposition National Federation Party says police intimidation caused a school to shut the party's talanoa session on Tuesday night.

The party said repeated police inquiries about the purpose of the meeting and its agenda caused the management of Khemindra Primary School in Savusavu to withdraw permission for the use of its premises.

The party, in a statement, called the police action sabotage.

It said they had no right to interfere in any meeting to be held by a political party.

The party said the Public Order (Amendment) Act gave freedom to political parties and other organisations to hold meetings without the need for police permits except when the venue is a public place like parks and roads.

It said the police did not understand, and respect, the fundamental rights and freedoms of Fijians and the need for political parties to operate in a free and fair environment where people were unafraid and totally free to ask questions, raise issues and express dissent against any government policy.
