The newspaper, The National, reported that Ms Skate is running for Moresby South against the incumbent sports minister Justin Tkatchenko.

She is running for the People's Progress Party, not the People's National Congress, which was founded by her late father of which Mr Tkatchenko is the candidate.

Her father, more widely known as Bill Skate, was prime minister from 1997 until 1999, when he resigned in the face of a motion of no confidence.

He took on the premiership after Sir Julius Chan, whose government was rocked by a scandal over hiring mercenaries for the Bougainville war.

Under Sir William, the war ended, but his term was dogged by allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
