The governor of the Northern Marianas says the US military forces deployed in Guam and Japan can protect the CNMI against the looming threat of North Korea.

Ralph Torres says he is not concerned with what he calls the rogue state's recent sabre rattling.

Last month, North Korea test-fired several ballistic missiles.

Mr Torres said he was confident the US military can protect the region as attested by the dispatch of the USS Vinson Carrier Strike Force to the Sea of Japan.

He also said that with the growing tension, the CNMI could play a vital role in the US government's plans to protect the US mainland from threats from the region.
