The leader of Papua New Guinea's National Alliance Party, Patrick Pruaitch, says central bank governor, Loi Bakani, should stop playing politics and acting as a proxy for the prime minister.

Earlier this week Mr Bakani called for election candidates to steer clear of discussing economic issues because of the risk of confusing voters.

The Post Courier newspaper quoted Mr Pruaitch saying there is no country in the world where a respectable leader would advise the public not to discuss economic policy in the lead up to national elections.

Mr Pruaitch, who until last week was PNG's Treasurer, said Mr Bakani may think he is beyond scrutiny as head of the Bank of Papua New Guinea, which, he said, in recent years had become one of the least transparent arms of the state.

He says Mr Bakani might prefer the public not to discuss the economy because he has played a significant part in its mismanagement.
