The Tuvalu Parliament is developing a strategic plan for the first time with the help of the UNDP's Pacific Office.

The Tuvalu parliamentary speaker Otinielu Tauteleimalae Tausi says for parliament to function properly and efficiently, it needs to be an independent entity, separate from the executive and judiciary.

The UNDP's Blerim Vela has been conducting interviews with key stakeholders in the parliament and government to help formulate a plan.

He said there was an understanding across the board that more resources were needed, for activities such as legal counselling for MPs and a physical premises for the parliament, so it could perform its functions.

The speaker said the design for a new Parliament House should be completed by August.
