The project, which will be administered by the Conservation Environment and Protection Authority, is worth nearly US$500,000.

It will be funded by the World Bank's Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Development Programme.

The UN's Resident Co-ordinator Roy Trivedy said the initiative hoped to protect the remaining rainforests in the Baining Mountains, Nakanai and Whiteman Ranges.

The protection is also hoped to open avenues for rural communities to bring in sustainable livelihood goods such as soap, Moringa oil and organic cocoa.
