Three on three basketball has been added to the sporting program for this years Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu.

Van2017 CEO Clint Flood said there was some time in the second week of competition to fill and they "wanted to make make sure the sports program for both weeks of the Games was packed out with excitement".

3x3 basketball is growing rapidly, with the Cook Islands making their World Championships debut in China last year.

Clint Flood said they were approached by FIBA Oceania, through the Pacific Games Council, about adding basketball to the program.

"We needed to look for a sport where the impact on our venues, villages and costs would be minimal, and with a sport already approved as part of the Pacific Games Charter, 3 x 3 fit perfectly," he said.

"The format of this sport which is now going to be in the 2020 Olympics, fits well with our other 13 sports. It is fast action packed into a couple of days of competition and will give fans yet another outlet to express their love for sport."

Ten teams from across the Pacific are expected to compete in the 3x3 format in Port Vila, with less than five months until the Mini Games get underway in December.
